Thursday, October 2

Departure for France.

 

Friday, October 3

Arrival in Paris, Charles de Gaulle Airport. Departure by deluxe motorcoach to Etretat. In route, lunch at we enter Normandy. Check-in for 2 nights at the Dormy House in Etretat. Dinner at Dormy House.

 

Saturday, October 4

Morning at leisure to enjoy the beautiful surroundings & the cliffs at Falaise d’Etretat & a visit of Fromagerie Le Valaine, a fabrication of farm goat cheese. mussels & frites will be our lunch in Fecamp, the only major town along the coast d’Albatre, followed by a visit of the Palais Benedictine, a mock Gothic & Renaissance homage to the ego of Alexander Le Grand, a local wine merchant who rediscovered the monk’s recipe for Benedictine, the famous herbal liquor. It was the creation of Dom Bernardo Vincelli, a venitien monk at the beginning of the XVI century. Time at leisure for shopping & dinner at l’Auberge de la Rouge in Fecamp.

 

Sunday, October 5

After breakfast, departure for Canisy. Our journey will take us through the harbour of Le Havre, created in 1517 by Francois I before crossing the Normandy bridge and reaching Honfleur, a major defensive port in the 15th century. Lunch in Bayeux at the Restaurant Le Lion d’Or. Bayeux was the first town to be liberated by the Allies in 1944 and fortunate to escape war damage. Afternoon, visit of the famous tapestry of Bayeux, a lively comic strip justifying William le Conqueror’s invasion of England. This 230 ft. long embroidered hanging was probably commissioned by Bishop Odo de Bayeux and offer insight into the 11th century life. We will then visit the American Cemetery at St. Laurent-sur-Mer & Omaha Beach~ site where in the early hours of June 6, 1944, Allied Forces began landing on the shores of Normandy. Check-in at the Chateau de Canisy for 3 nights as we step back into history in the private chateau of our friend, Comte Denis de Kergorlay who opens his home and grounds and extends his style of Norman hospitality for us. Dinner in the ancestral dining room.

 

Monday, October 6

Morning at leisure to enjoy the grounds. After lunch at the chateau, visits of Ferme l’Hermitiere, a farmhouse production of calvados & cider in St. Jean-des-Champs & l’Atelier du Cuivre in Villedieu-les-Poeles, one of France’s oldest copper workshops. Dinner at the 13th century Chateau d’Agneaux in Agneaux.

 

Tuesday, October 7

Visit of Les Jambons du Cotentin, a smoked-ham production and Camembert Reo, a traditional production with unpasteurized in Lessay. Lunch at Le Mascaret in Heugueuville-sur-Sienne with Chef Philippe Hardy. Exploration of the Mt. St. Michel, one of the most enchanting sights in France. It grew from a humble 8th-century oratory to become a Benedictine monastery in the 12th & 13th centuries. Farewell dinner at the Chateau of Canisy.

 

Wednesday, October 8

Departure for Pacy-sur-Eure. In route, visit of Fromagerie Graindorge, a fabrication of Pont l’Eveque & Livarot cheeses in Livarot with lunch at Restaurant Au Pot d’Etain in Manerbe. Afternoon visits of Les Ducks de la Mare Hermier, a production of foie gras & Claude Monet’s Home & Gardens in Giverny where the impressionist painter worked until his death at the age of 86. Check-in for 1 night & dinner at the Chateau de Brecourt, a fine example of Louis XIII brick & stone chateau in Pacy-sur-Eure.

 

Thursday, October 9

After breakfast, departure for Paris. Check-in for 3 nights at the Park Hotel Orleans Palace. Welcome lunch at Restaurant Les Vendanges. Remainder of day at leisure with orientation & Paris by Night with a boat ride on the famous “Bateaux-Mouches.”

 

Friday, October 10

Entire day at leisure for sightseeing, shopping, museums & to discover Paris, the “City of Light.”

 

Saturday, October 11

After breakfast, visit of the Potager du Roi, the original garden of Louis XIV & the Chateau of Versailles. The Palace of Versailles was originally built in the 16th century as a simple hunting lodge for Louis XIII. It was expanded to the opulent palace that housed the reigning kings through Louis-Philippe. Lunch at the Brasserie du Theatre. Remainder of day at leisure.

 

Sunday, October 12

After breakfast, departure for Charles de Gaulle Airport & return flight to U.S.
